In the time it takes to read this page, sudden cardiac arrest will have claimed another victim. This year alone, 330,000 U.S. adults died before reaching a hospital. It doesn't have to be this way. Up to 50,000 deaths could be prevented each year if an Automated External Defibrillator (AED, a small device that can restart a heart that has stopped beating) is available for immediate use. During sudden cardiac arrest, it takes just 4 to 6 minutes for brain damage to set in. Yet, the average time it takes for an ambulance to respond to a 911 call is more than 6 minutes. Actions taken in the first 6 minutes before an ambulance arrives can mean life or death.
